Crime and Demographics in Los Angeles

by Jeff Davis

Another mayoral race is underway and the two main candidates are battling over whether crime has gone up or down in Los Angeles.

How do you make crime appear to go down in California? You redefine what a crime is! Stealing $950 worth of merchandise used to be felony theft, but today in California thanks to Proposition 47, it’s a misdemeanor and if the police bother to catch the thief, they’ll probably just give him a ticket and ask him to show up later in court. Even worse, Prop. 47 allowed the reducing of sentences of many criminals as noted here.

After all, who cares if someone breaks into your car and steals less than $950 worth of stuff or if someone is hooked on illegal drugs and constantly stealing things to buy more drugs? None of that is serious crime… at least according to liberals in California.

One source notes that Proposition 47 turned 200,000 past felonies into misdemeanors, letting many felons out of prison.

Not too surprisingly crime has been going up. A CBS news article notes “Perry Lutz says his struggle to survive as a small businessman became a lot harder after California voters reduced theft penalties 1 1/2 years ago.”

“About a half-dozen times this year, shoplifters have stolen expensive drones or another of the remote-controlled toys he sells in HobbyTown USA, a small shop in Rocklin, northeast of Sacramento. ‘It’s just pretty much open season,’ Lutz said. ‘They’ll pick the $800 unit and just grab it and run out the door.’”

“Anything below $950 keeps the crime a misdemeanor — and likely means the thieves face no pursuit and no punishment, say retailers and law enforcement officials. Large retailers including Safeway, Target, Rite Aid and CVS pharmacies say shoplifting increased at least 15 percent, and in some cases, doubled since voters approved Proposition 47 and ended the possibility of charging shoplifting as a felony with the potential for a prison sentence.”

In Los Angeles the left-liberal regime has been caught fudging its facts. A DailyNews article reports “The violent crime rate rose for a third consecutive year in Los Angeles, but that‘s not something Mayor Eric Garcetti is eager to highlight ahead of the March election, one mayoral challenger said this week. During a candidate forum hosted by the Northridge East Neighborhood Council, Mitchell Schwartz, a political strategist who is attempting to unseat Garcetti, accused the mayor of hiding and suppressing the police reports from last year by not holding his annual news conference to discuss the end-of-year crime statistics.”

“Garcetti’s campaign spokesman, Yusef Robb, fired back Thursday, calling Schwartz’s accusation a ‘cockamamie conspiracy theory’ and blamed the lack of a news conference this year on scheduling…”

“Schwartz, who is proposing to add 2,500 officers to the force, includes the crime increase figures in his standard pitch to voters…”

The mayor’s rival is almost certainly correct. Even if Garcetti releases the “official” numbers, how do we adjust them so that we correct for Prop. 47 turning felonies into misdemeanors?

The bottom line is that crime will continue to go up in Los Angeles because it is becoming more and more heavily non-White and Blacks and Latinos commit a lot more crime on average than Whites. One source notes “The 1990 United States Census and 2000 United States Census found that non-Hispanic whites were becoming a minority in Los Angeles. Estimates for the 2010 United States Census results find Latinos to be approximately half (47-49%) of the city’s population, growing from 40% in 2000 and 30-35% in 1990 census.”

This is what happens when you don’t guard the border to keep illegal aliens out. Hopefully we can begin to enforce immigration law again under Trump and begin to deport the massive swarm of illegals, who are rising crime and bringing Third World problems to Los Angeles and the rest of the United States.
